Japanese Candlestick consolidation patterns are displayed below from strongest to weakest.
Consolidation Patterns are typically weak candlestick patterns that have close to an even chance of resolving in either direction (i.e. less than 1.5 times as likely to resolve in either direction).
Consolidations in an Uptrend
Harami
Consolidation pattern
A tall white candle followed by a shorter black candle. The body of the second candle is enclosed within the body (between the open and close) of the first candle.
Harami Cross
Consolidation pattern
A tall white candle followed by a doji candlestick (with the open near the close). The second candle occurs within the body of the first candle.
Tri-Star
Very weak bearish consolidation pattern
Three consecutive dojis in a prevailing uptrend signal indecision and a possible reversal.
Dragonfly
Consolidation pattern
A single candlestick with a tall shadow and open and close near the top of the trading range.
On Neck Line
Consolidation pattern
A tall white candle gaps up to a shorter black candle which closes near the previous high.
In Neck Line
Consolidation pattern
A tall white candle gaps up to a shorter black candle which closes within the upper shadow of the first candle.
Two Crows
Consolidation pattern
A tall white candle gaps up to a shorter black candle. The shadows may overlap but not the bodies. This is followed by a tall black candle that opens within the body of the second candle and closes within the body of the first candle.
Meeting Line
Consolidation pattern
A tall white candle is followed by a tall black candle that closes near the first candlestick close.
Kicking
Consolidation pattern
A white marubozu (no shadows) gaps down to a black marubozu (no shadows).
Ladder Top
Consolidation pattern
Three overlapping white candles followed by a fourth white candle with a longer tail. Each of the first four candles has a higher close than the previous body. The pattern then gaps down to a fifth, black candle that usually closes within the body of the first candle.
Upside Tasuki Gap
Consolidation pattern
A tall white candle gaps up, with no overlapping bodies, to a second white candle. A third, black candle then closes within the gap between the first two candles.
Consolidations in a Downtrend
Harami
Consolidation pattern
A tall black candle followed by a shorter white candle. The open and the close of the white candle usually occur within the body of the first candle.
Homing Pigeon
Consolidation pattern
A tall black candle followed by a shorter black candle. The open and the close of the second candle usually occur within the body of the first candle.
Harami Cross
Consolidation pattern
A tall black candle followed by a doji. The second candle occurs within the body of the initial candle.
Tri-Star
Weak bearish consolidation pattern
Three consecutive dojis in a prevailing downtrend signal indecision and a possible reversal.
Gravestone
Consolidation pattern
A candle with the open and close near the bottom of the trading range. A long upper shadow signals a possible reversal.
On Neck Line
Consolidation pattern
A tall black candle gaps down to a shorter white candle. The close of second candle should match (or nearly match) the previous low.
In Neck Line
Consolidation pattern
A tall black candle gaps down to a shorter white candle. The close of second candle should overlap the lower shadow of the previous candle.
Meeting Line
Consolidation pattern
A tall black candle is followed by a tall white candle. The two candles should have the same close.
Kicking
Consolidation pattern
A black marubozu (no shadows - strong bear signal) gaps up to a white marubozu (no shadows - strong bull signal).
Ladder Bottom
Consolidation pattern
Three overlapping black candles followed by a fourth black candle with a long upper shadow. Each of the first four candles has a lower close than the previous body. A gap up to a fifth and final candle, which is white and usually closes within the body of the first candle.
Downside Tasuki Gap
Consolidation pattern
A tall black candle gaps down to a second black candle. A third, white candle closes within the gap between the first two candles.
Three Stars in the South
Weak consolidation pattern
Three black candles that get progressively smaller with the third candle usually closing below the body of the first candle.
